On Marketing Books, First-Person Essays, and Homecoming Queens

I'm including this first person essay in this Frugal Book Marketing blog because when I teach marketing classes to authors at UCLA, my students often have trouble wrapping their minds around exactly what the first-person essay that should be included in their media kits is. And that difficulty is exacerbated when I tell them that it helps if the essay is associated with issues that are currently in the news. This one is related to current events at the most basic level--that is, it is a commentary on a news/feature story in a respected newspaper. But the issues are current, too. I hope it helps Frugal Book Marketing readers. I've also included the author credit, because that is a vital part of marketing media
Marketing, Continuing Education, and Homecoming Queens

By Carolyn Howard-Johnson

I admit it. A feature story in the New York Times Digest on...ahem...beauty queens struck a chord. On several levels.

The article by Tara Parker-Pope told the story of Heidi Hansen, a forty-two year old mother of teens who has gone back to school to study nursing. And if that weren’t nontraditional enough, she’s running for homecoming queen. Gasp!

Even more amazing she’s marketing her candidacy with the same vigor of her young competitors and she’s doing it without a shred of apology for her untraditional paths or (apparently) without an utterance of the word “shameless” connected with her marketing campaign (which I’ve always contended has a subtext that there is something to be ashamed of).

So, I should back up and tell you I have an agenda. I like to defend my own circuitous path to a degree from the University of Southern California (USC). I was graduated at the ripe old age of thirty-three with two young children, one of whom I once hauled to class with me and let him pretend to catch fish in the fountain outside my class window where I could keep an eye on him. By the time I received that degree on heavy, lineny paper, I had taken at least one class every semester (including summers) since I started seventeen years before. I always considered this approach to education a gigantic plus. One class at a time with plenty of time to focus on required (and optional!) study and research. I figured I was getting more from my education and would retain it longer.

That explains my personal interest in the late-bloomer aspect of this NY Times story. But I find Hansen’s proclivity for marketing just as satisfying. Not only did she decide to run for homecoming queen because“…it’s a continuing process of being engaged in the world around me, and right now a big part of my world is my life on campus,” but she isn’t dodging the issue of being, shall we say, a bit older than the other candidates even though the photograph in the Times looks to me as if she could easily pass. No. Her campaign slogan to attract votes is,“I’m not your mother, but I could be.”

Now, you should know that I began a lifelong interest in public relations very early when I worked in New York as a publicist and when I worked in several jobs as a journalist and writer. But it didn’t really congeal until my last semester at USC when I studied public relations under the head of the PR department, a former President of Western Airlines who believed that the way to find the best and brightest students for his department was to teach entry level classes and teach them as if he were teaching seasoned pros. And my awareness of the importance of marketing in all our lives only became more intense when I became a published novelist, poet, and author of how-to books on—you guessed it—marketing!

So you can imagine how I rooted for Ms. Hansen when I read that she enlisted the help of every demographic she had access to (other than her children who seem to be. . . well, oblivious to their mother’s schmaltziness). She found fellow students (not necessarily students in her age range) to contribute their skills—one writing a musical campaign ditty, another for producing a video. I call this cross-promotionin my Frugal Book Promoter, a how-to book on marketing for writers. Mr. Hansen's videographer and musician friends are both getting their share of marketing exposure by being part of her campaign. I mean, a mention in the New York Times? I sure hope these students use that information (and the example set by Ms. Hansen) in their resumes as they learn more and more that nontraditional paths and tried-and-true marketing work for everyone.

Regardless of their age.

When I saw the Table of Contents for this promoting bible, I was hooked. There was a chapter on everything I wanted or needed to know. I have written three "How To" books and have had a number of reviews and awards, but I am looking to go to the next level with some fresh new ideas. In other words, I had reached a plateau and did not want to repeat the same old methods.

When I first started reading the book I immediately liked the tone. It was as though the author was in my living room saying: Mary, why don't you try this and maybe you don't want to do this." Her books, like mine, are based on her personal experience. She has done book fairs; she has taught classes and consulted with authors; she has written award-winning books. She is an expert. That is what makes the book so powerful. I have read books that make me feel guilty if I haven't done ten things for my book that day.

Yesterday, I exhibited at a book festival and most of the authors were complaining that they had few sales. I looked up the topic in my new book. The author says "Book festivals are for readers." I knew intuitively that she was right. She goes on to say that these are really networking opportunities for the writers and not that many books are sold. That shift made me feel encouraged rather than discouraged at the book festival's results. Even though I did not sell tons of books, I did meet a lot of people: readers, writers and bookstore owners. I got a few tips and gave a few tips. I reconnected with people I had seen at previous events and got some recommendations for the best venues for future events. The author was spot on.

I also checked the chapter on book awards. I have won a total of 28 book awards for my three books and thought I knew all there was to know about awards and have spoken on the subject. However, after reading that section on book awards, I realized that I was not doing enough publicizing after I won the book awards and I am going to remedy that situation. Another tip I picked up. I am now going to say Mary Greenwood, multi-award winning author, instead of award-winning author.

Of course, I wished I had seen this book when my first book came out, but I can see that this book is useful for all authors, those working on their first book and authors who already have published several books and need some new ideas. I know I will go back and reread a chapter when I am starting a new task such as a press release or am thinking about doing a new blog or sprucing up my website.

I am just starting on my new book about "How to Negotiate With Your Dog" (hint: you don't.) I am going to use The Frugal Book Promoter Second Edition, the whole way. I can't wait to get started!

Frugal Author Book Marketing, Author Sites And Blogs

Just imagine the potential when it comes to online marketing. It's a huge ocean out there with millions of people online daily. The marketing possibilities are endless. For the frugal author seeking frugal ways to promote their books there are endless author related sites, clubs, forums and groups to join. Most authors start there, list their books and set the course to create buzz for their books.

That's fine, yet that's not using the power and fullness of the Internet to promote and market your books. Sure, there are many free sites, groups, clubs, forums and social networks that you can join for free and market your books. Yet that's the low ball way of approaching author promotions and book marketing. Thousands upon thousands do it this way and with little results.

The first step to creating online book buzz while promoting both yourself as a author and your books is to create a authors site or a authors blog. A simple place where book lovers can find out about you as a author and a person. Where others can read about you, your book, your book description, other important information and of course see a picture of both you as a author and your book cover.

Once you have successfully created a wonderful authors site or authors blog, the next step is to promote and market your authors site or blog, while sharing your book online at other great sites. Note that I said "other great sites".

It's important to have a game plan when promoting and marketing your site and just because there are many free sites out there where you can share your book, site and blog. That doesn't necessarily mean that is the best way to successfully promote and market you as a author or your books. Do your homework, plan ahead, be creative and set goals.

Frugal Book Marketing Blogs

Many times a author can't afford to spend large amounts of money having a webmaster create a high tech authors site. The hosting fees per month can run hundreds of dollars per year plus anywhere from $500.00 upward just to have a webmaster design and create a simple authors site.

Author blogs are becoming increasingly more popular. Many authors have the ability to create, design and launch a authors blog using various free templates that are available within the blogging community. It does require some knowledge, experience and history with blogs to create a successful authors blog as there are many important factors to take into consideration.

There are ways for authors to create a authors blog the frugal way. One is to just simply go for it and start designing. The other way is to find someone that will do the creating for you at a reasonable price for their webmaster services.

Regardless of which way you choose to go, you can get a great authors blog online and create a online presence where book lovers will find your authors blog frugally and save money getting the project done.

Book Marketing The Frugal And Smart Way

The frugal book marketing author. You can find hundred's of thousands of them online running around to this site and that site registering and uploading their books, book descriptions and trying to create book buzz and market their books.

Many of these sites are over flooded with authors and books all trying to compete for book sales. Between 60% and 70% of all the visitors to these sites are authors all trying to accomplish the same thing. To sell their books.

While this does provide for getting one's name up in lights, joining the crowd and creating great friendships with other authors. One must ask the question, is this affective marketing.

Well if one were to look at say the top 100 best sellers at any given time, one would find few of those authors running around joining sites and self promoting their books. Successful authors higher professionals to market and promote their books.

Within this, there are numerous ways that a author can seek professional marketing and book promotions at prices that are reasonable. Everyone has to start somewhere and while many times authors can't afford the cost of prime marketing, it doesn't mean that they cant find affordable and affective marketing.

However, order is a key word meaning that everything must be done in a order with a overall objective. The first and most important part of that order, goal and objective should be to have a authors site or blog that showcases the author and his or her books. Once a author has obtained a authors site or blog, the next step is to market that authors site so that book lovers and book buyers can find the site.

Remember, your online authors site or blog will become the number one place where book lovers find you, read about you as a author and your books. Once your authors site is up and running, then comes the marketing process of your site.

Frugal Author Blogs & Book Marketing

Attention Authors!

Do you have a authors site or blog? Many times authors depend on their publisher to promote and market their books. Some publishers provide authors with a single page that shares the authors book on their site. Other times authors purchase the in print online bookstore data base where thousands to millions of other books are listed and found by the ISBN number. Sounds impressive, however, who is going to search for an author by his name, book title or the ISBN number? It rarely happens.

Having your own authors site or blog to showcase, promote and market your book is very important. Of course you can run around to sites where authors interact and share your book, but then again, so is every other author. I thought authors authored books.

I encourage you to create, design and build your own blog to showcase your book, the book description, an about the author page, reviews, contact information and other important information. A place where readers and book lovers can sit back and read about you as a author, your book, current projects and even upcoming projects.

Here are a few author sites /blogs that we have assisted authors in getting online. If you need some help, advice, information or just some encouragement. Contact us at kingdomexpansion1@gmail.com as we can help. Do it the frugal way and get the exposure you deserve.
