BookBuzzr Offers FREE Webinars for Authors

BookBuzzr Offers New Learning Ops for Writers; or
How to Avoid Becoming a Book Marketing Dinosaur by Marketing Your Book with Emerging Technologies.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The technology landscape and associated opportunities for marketing your book is changing at an unprecedented pace. Online games, mobile marketing, Facebook, Twitter, the Kindle, the iPhone, the iPad and the Android are pushing the boundaries of what is possible when it comes to promoting and marketing your book.
As an author, it is important that you keep abreast of these emerging trends and technologies so that you can take advantage of these opportunities. You don't want to become a book marketing dinosaur, do you! Ha!
The first step in avoiding the fate of the dinosaurs is to spend some time to educate yourself, and Bookbuzzr is providing a perfect place to do just that. It's a new kind of online learning environment … one that was focused on getting practical, actionable information from industry leading experts to authors in the most efficient manner.  I will be participating so I'm especially eager for you to know about it early enough to include it in your new year calendar. Here is their announcement:
Announcing BookBuzzr’s Book Marketing Technologies Center (BBMTC)
In order to help you to successfully navigate through the swarm of new technologies and separate the noise from the signal, we at BookBuzzr are launching the BookBuzzr Book Marketing Technologies Center (BBMTC.)
BBMTC is the world’s first and only online, free, learning program designed to help authors learn about emerging new technologies and associated opportunities for book promotion. BBMTC features a monthly online seminar or roundtable (aka webinar) featuring industry leading book marketing experts. Each month they will cover a new technology or emerging trend.
Our panel of experts will talk and share about technologies with authors and writers through webinars and blog posts to cover it comprehensively. This is our way of getting different viewpoints to the table about what is the latest trend emerging for authors in technologies that will help them reach out to more people.
We will have one webinar each month on the topic and as many view points as possible from industry experts as article/blog posts.
For each webinar the panel will share their views about the topic and discuss it in detail. The latter half of the webinar will be dedicated to answering questions from authors and writers. Questions can be asked before, during, and after the seminar on Twitter (with Hashtag #BBMTC) or on our BookBuzzr Facebook Page.
How much does it cost?
You can attend any workshop for free. Our generous expert partners are giving away much of their knowledge for free. Why is BBMTC free you ask? Our expert partners are doing this in the hope that at least some of the attendees will become their clients in the future. Also its our and our experts way of giving back to the author community. Of course you are under no obligation to purchase anything.
What is the schedule and what are my next steps?
The schedule is outlined below. Please bear in mind that the schedule may change and we may make changes to the format of this program or the schedule based on feasibility and opportunities. Simply sign-up to our monthly newsletter to get notified about upcoming BBMTC events.
If you’re interested in writing a book, then I’ve found a great resource for you. Written by PR guru, award-winning writer, Carolyn Howard-Johnson, The Great First Impression Book Proposal guides you through every step you need to know to impress a publisher.
Do you know the differences between fiction and nonfiction writers trying to sell their books? The former writes their book first and then sends a query letter, including a specific number of chapters (requested by the publisher or agent). Their book must be ready to go because the publisher may want to contract their work.
Nonfiction writers send proposals, in which they need to impress the publisher on the idea of their work. The book isn’t written. Before that sounds like the easier path of the two, it isn’t. A book proposal is well researched and formatted; the process is similar to writing a book and can be complicated if you don’t know what you’re doing.
To the rescue, The Great First Impression Book Proposal! In six chapters, you’ll learn how to get past gatekeepers, entice jaded gatekeepers, get an open invitation, and keep those doors open. You’ll also have a checklist to make sure your proposal is at its best. The resource section includes a basic query letter sample, suggested studies, and resources for editing, grammar, book promotion, publishing and more.
A book proposal is a mysterious beast. It’s not something you can bypass; it’s a necessary “evil” of the publishing world. To do it correctly, you need to know the guidelines. In essence, you’re proposing a business deal, but your letter shouldn’t be too formal. It needs to be friendly with eye-attracting titles without being too cozy or using over-the-top language like “amazing”. It’s a fine balance; one you’ll need to learn to be successful.
You’ll learn about the publishing industry; the correct way to research, write, and format your letter; and the steps to make yours a winning proposal. This is a jammed-packed resource, with the tag line “Everything You Need To Know To Impress A Publisher in Twenty Minutes or Less”. A quick read with everything to write a winning proposal.
Howard-Johnson writes with the experience of a professional and the candor of a best friend who doesn’t want you to fall on your face. With humor and friendliness, she offers solid, practical tips. She is one of my favorite authors, and her books always top my must-have list. This one is no exception. It’ll stay on my resource shelf.
If you’ve ever thought about being an author, you need The Great First Impression Book Proposal in your resources.
For The Frugal Christian Authors
Some authors can't afford to hire a New York marketing firm to promote and market their books. Understandably and especially in today's economy. More and more Christian authors and authors alike are searching for ways to market their books without spending a ton of money.
Most authors soon come to realize that they need a platform which requires having a authors website. Many times a author will choose to have a authors web site and a authors blog. Once this 1st and most important phase is completed, then comes the promotions and marketing of the authors book and website.
Amazon Secrets FREE For Subscribing to Valuable Newsletter
Authors love to hate Amazon.com. Trouble is, we can't thrive without it. Sadly most authors and even publishers don't know how to effectively use the features Amazon offers -- especially the trick to achieving bestselling ratings. I don't want Frugal Book Marketing blog subscribers to be one of those folks.
Luckily, Aggie Villaneuva learned that stuff the hard way -- and she achieved two category bestsellers in 2010, each book in three separate categories! She freely shares that knowledge with us in her TWO white paper reports in ONE, "How Choosing Kindle Categories Wisely Got me Two Best Sellers This Year." Plus "How to Gain Bestseller Status in Amazon’s Print Bookstore Too."
Miraculously, (because Aggie is a peach!)  I'm offering it at no charge to authors willing to help other authors learn even more about the writing and publishing world by subscribing to my Sharing with Writers newsletter. One report for the author who recommends my newsletter. Another for the author who signs up. It doesn't get any better than that!
To qualify for this double gift, put SUBSCRIBE-FREE "AMAZON Secrets" REPORT in the subject line of an e-mail and send it to HoJoNews@aol.com. In the window of the e-mail, list the e-mail address of the recommending author and the new subscriber. Both authors will get an e-copy of Aggie's report back in their e-mail boxes. Easy as that!
PS: You'll also find the section on using Amazon in my The Frugal Book Promoter useful. Amazon isn't perfect but they are trying to be author friendly. And, I have to say, they've never been late with a royalty payment. Authors can't always say that about their publishers, can they? (-:
The Great First Impression Book Proposal is a book that all authors need to get past the gate keepers as Carolyn refers to them in her books. This book is by no means a step-by-step plan, but it does give you the basics for publishing your book.
The publishing industry has changed. In today’s environment, more is placed on the author to make a good impression on agents, editors, and publishers if they want to get their manuscript published.
The first impression is all you have to get the attention of those that hold the publishing purse strings. If you do not create something of value for their time and effort in your first impression your chances of becoming a published diminish greatly.
Carolyn’s The Great First Impression Book Proposal while not guaranteeing publishing does offer things that will aid you in the possibility of becoming published.
The Great First Impression Book Proposal is another in a series of little $6.95  pamphlets about various aspects of writing, editing, and publishing including Great Little Last-Minute Editing Tips for Writers.
This is a book that anyone considering writing for publication should read. In fact, they should read all of Carolyn’s pamphlets about writing. Some may feel that they know the information in Carolyn’s pamphlets; even prose will find they are still a good source of information and review of what authors need to know about getting past the gatekeepers.
Idea for You Holiday Greetings: Idea for Marketing, Too
Little Known Poetry History: Chapbooks, a tradition in the poetry world since Elizabethan times, are named after the itinerant chapmen who travelled from village to village selling their goods.
My poetry partner Magdalena Ball and I figure there is no holiday greeting more meaningful than a poem—a real poem, not sing-songy impersonal verse from the shelves of card shops. With that in mind, we have created the Celebration Series of chapbooks and have released TaDa! Just in time for the holiday season! a chapbook titled Blooming Red: Christmas Poetry for the Rational.
Now, here’s the exciting part. Literature lovers everywhere can order these chapbooks with full-color covers by prize-winning water colorist Vicki Thomas for only $3. each. That’s only $75 for 25 of the most memorable holiday greetings you’ve ever sent to your friends and relatives. Each booklet is a card and gift in one.
Blooming Red includes Maggie’s science-inspired and Carolyn’s nostalgic poetry. It also includes some humorous poems for fair measure.
Here is one of the lighter-spirited ones from me:
Cruising Santa Clause©
After the season of pinescent
and candlewax, here is Santa
of the Seas, a ringer for the real guy.
Jolly round bearded face, sans a pipe
clenched tight in his teeth, wearing
his off-duty uniform, candy-cane-colored
running shoes, green gabardines, cranberry
worsted blazer, rhinestone-studded
lapel pin, and always with the Mrs, she as gray
as a Midwest winter day, beside his hollyberry
splendor. I peek discreetly. There walking
among Etruscan tombs, perched on remnants
of a Corinthian capitol at Ephesus
as if it were a stool, bright red and green
against the sand at Giza, wandering
through the ship’s casino, poking a placard
high to bid on a Kincaid canvas replica
(Ahhhh! The colored lights illuminating
the snow embellished by the master
himself). Best of all, night of nights! Santa
seated front row in the Stardust
Theater, other upfront guests volunteer
him to saw the gammy woman in red fringe
and sequins in half. He hesitates not a moment,
but went straight to his work.
The chapbooks in the Celebration Series include Cherished Pulse (for anyone you love), also with artwork from California artist Vicki Thomas (www.budurl.com/CherishedPulse); She Wore Emerald Then (for mothers on your gift list) with photographs by May Lattanzio (www.budurl.com/MotherChapbook); Imagining the Future: For Fathers and Other Masculine Apparitions (for the men in your life) (www.budurl.com/Imagining). And now Blooming Red for the special folks on your holiday list! (www.budurl.com/BloomingRed). All are available individually at only $6.95 on Amazon but are only $3. each when ordered in quantities of 25 or more directly from the poets. Put HOLIDAY ORDER in the subject line and send an e-mail to me at HoJoNews@aol.com . I will make payment arrangements with you and give you the small shipping cost for the number you order.
Magdalena Ball runs the highly respected CompulsiveReader.com review site. She is the author of the poetry book Repulsion Thrust, which was published to unanimous five-star reviews. Her novel Sleep Before Evening, was a Next Generation Indie Book Awards Finalist.
Carolyn Howard-Johnson's poetry appears frequently in review journals. She is listed in Poets & Writers and her chapbook of poetry, Tracings (http://budurl.com/CarolynsTracings), was given the Award of Excellence by the Military Writers Society of America and She Wore Emerald Then won its highest honor of gold. One of her poems recently won the Franklin Christoph Poetry Prize. She is also an award-winning novelist and short story writer and instructor for UCLA Extension Writers' Program.
The Frugal Mom
In this economy one must be wise with their money to include moms. Actually the frugal mom goes back generations and isn't really some new creation. I remember my mother buying groceries wisely and getting the most for her money. As a child I disliked waiting and waiting at the check out stand as the cashier spent time going through endless coupons and all the time the people waiting in line behind us became impatient. Then came the fact that when my mother did her grocery shopping, there were always two shopping carts and it took forever to get out of the grocery store, however, that was how my mother did her shopping. If it was on sale, she bought it for even weeks later.
I recall her buying lots of meat at the butcher shop and then taking it home and cutting it into portions and freezing it for the meals, days, weeks and even months to come. You see my mother was a frugal shopper when it came to the grocery stores and even would visit 2 or 3 stores to catch all the sales.
You would be surprised just how much you can get for your hard earned dollars by working the grocery stores to your advantage. Just a few weeks back I went to one grocery store for some sale items, spent $39.00 and saved over $40.00. That's almost $80.00 worth of groceries for under $40.00.
Happy shopping ....
How To Self Publish
You've either become a do it yourself author or you are considering it. Why? Most likely because of funding or you might have that creative DNA that loves taking on projects and seeing them through.
Today many authors are choosing to self publish. If you have a computer with the right programs, some experience with those programs and the time, you can prepare your own manuscript as a print ready file. OK, well it's not quite that easy as many first time self publishing authors soon find out.
Some advice for the first time self publishing author. Do your home work and take in all the information that you can find. It makes the whole process much easier, you come to know the do's, the dont's and the many pitfalls. The best part is that after a few self publishing courses (online searching and reading) you will have the basic 101 information down.
The Fisherman's Wife, Rebekah Redeemed, Shelter From The Storm
The Fisherman’s Wife
Synopsis: Johanna marries the man she has loved since they were both children, but it doesn’t turn out quit like she’d dreamed. Her husband Simon works hard at his fishing business on the Sea of Galilee. Johanna established her home, but struggles at giving Simon the children they both want. Her society shames her. They live in a world ruled by Rome and filled with rumors, rebellion, and messiahs. When a new rabbi arrives and calls Simon to follow him, she is left alone and must choose what to believe.
Rebekah Redeemed
Synopsis: Orphaned Rebekah becomes a servant in her uncle’s house in Bethany. Traded from relative to relative, she suffers neglect and abuse. When a Roman soldier assaults her, she flees in fear of her life and hides. Rebekah is discovered and Lazarus becomes her kinsman redeemer. Can Jesus redeem her soul? Can she forgive or break the chains of her past?
Shelter From the Storm
Synopsis: Brittany Camp flees to a short-term shelter for battered women as the worst snow storm in 50 years hits Seattle. She uses the judicial system to fight for her family’s safety but finds herself only one step ahead of her volatile husband who is bent on killing her. This story focuses on courage and hope for a better life rather than the actual violence. Brittany’s journey shows the development of her emotions and personality as she learns how to face the fear and navigate the courts. Can she survive and save her children? Will the authorities believe her? How can she win when her husband, Abel Camp, is so charismatic? What if she loses her children?
A work of fiction, it is based on several women’s experiences. Its purpose is not only to give the reader a suspenseful novel, but to help raise awareness about the plight of the thousands of women who are abused every day. It helps those who never experience the terror to understand the victims, and shows victims that there is a way out that does not include taking personal revenge on their abusers.
Conspiracy, Intense Reading
NOW AVAILABLE ON AMAZON – Conspiracy is the first novel in the Conspiracy series.
A mystery/thriller with elements of science fiction, it merges fiction with facts similar to Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code.
Conspiracy reveals the shadowy underside of the illusion we call reality, revolving around the discovery of an ancient shadow organization of immense power.
Reviews: “wild and unexpected”; “a real page turner”; “an unforgettable experience”. Michael Cross had a troubled past. Forces set into motion long before his birth put him in conflict with the ancient, secret organization. Who began the Brotherhood? How long had they existed? A hundred years? A thousand? In that time, they had gained massive power, even infiltrating governments. How can such an organization be destroyed? This is the task that Michael Cross faces. In his conflict with the Brotherhood he discovers a secret so overwhelming, so unimaginable that it changes his life forever.
One thing is certain–nothing is what it seems. Conspiracy is available through Amazon and for more information about the book Conspiracy visit Fehrman Books
Teacher and Marketer Recommends New Book on Marketing
I have a motto: "Reading one book on book promotion is never enough."
Thus, I recommend Michelle Dunn's Mosquito Marketing, a book full of book-marketing essentials. Here is the heartfelt recommendation I wrote to Michelle, complete with disclaimer:
Dear Michelle:
Congratulations on a job well done! In the writing. In the accumulation of knowledge. And in the production. I shall recommend Mosquito Marketing to my UCLA students and my clients--every single one of them!
Yes, you may use that as an endorsement, though you may not want to because I contributed to the book. Thus I may appear biased. The thing is, I would have said the same thing even if I had no part in it! (-:
So, it's going up on my Web site (the Resources for Writers section of www.howtodoitfrugally.com) right now! And into my recommendation list for my students. Soon. (-:
Thank you so much. Mosquito Marketing (ISBN 1453605304) will be a valued part of books I am part of--ones that I keep in a special reference (and brag!) library. Great work!
Best,
Carolyn Howard-Johnson
Carolyn:
Just read your book on tweeting and what struck me most is Branding, Branding, and more Branding. Whew! Where do I begin? No, I am not a retailer but as you said, there might be something in it for writers, too!
The book, Frugal and Focused Tweeting, said:
YOUR TWITTER MONIKER is as important for your Twitter branding as it is for your e-mail addresses.
My Epiphany:
Duh! was my first thought; no one knew that my Twitter Moniker "rpmenter" stood for RPM Enterprises (my company name) but me. What everyone knew me by was "Scribal Press," my company imprint publishing name, my Web site and my news calendar of writer events. So before I could finish reading the book, I jumped online and immediately changed my Twitter Moniker everywhere not just on Twitter, from "rpmenter" to "Scribal Press." So my Twitter name is now www.twitter.com/scribalpress.
In Chapter Two, page 30, of Frugal and Focused Tweeting for Retailers, you suggested:
I will make ____ useful contacts a week. Twitter contacts include possible customers, but connecting with vendors, bloggers who write about shopping, and business editors at print and online media, etc., can be equally profitable in the long run.
My Epiphany:
I had no idea what number to use but it made me take notice and start thinking.
In Chapter Three, page 36, Frugal and Focused Tweeting talked... about branding using our Twitter biographies and you gave an example of what you would use for your own store.
I needed to go do a new bio on my Twitter account. Why? Branding that's why.
In Chapter Four, page 57, Frugal and Focused Tweeting said:
Tweet about new blog posts, newsletter editions, Web pages. More on this when we talk about integrating your marketing efforts in Chapter Seven.
My Epiphany:
Why I have never thought of this is beyond me.
Anyway, yes you were right again. There is something in this book for everyone, even those who don't think they want to to tweet.
Sincerely,
Sylvia McClain
Frugal Authors' Web Site Offers New Benefit
This is news I think Frugal Book Marketers will like, Smitty! (-:
I have been a member of Authors Den (AD) for about eight or nine years. At first I just loved their free (very frugal!) way for a new author to have a Web site. Then I started using their Gold membership to publish my newsletter.
I'm not much of a date keeper but that newsletter (It goes by the same name as this blog--branding you know!) has been around for some years now! I recommended it in my The Frugal Book Promoter, of course. And I've even partnered with Authors Den at the LA Times/UCLA Writers' Faire. Cross promotion always has its advantages, but it is an especially good marketing tool when one partners with those who already have lots of contacts and a great reputation.
The point of all this is that AD has some news. And I sure love spreading good news--especially when it comes from people I feel great about recommending. My AD friend Matt Miller writes:
"The AuthorsDen Services Marketplace is Open for Business!
"AuthorsDen.com, an online literary community established in 2000, has seen the toll researching the diverse components of the book industry has taken on writers. As a result, we recently launched the AuthorsDen Community MarketPlace...
"The MarketPlace brings together authors and community service providers to create a more artful product. It looks as if it will save us authors some promotion time. Find it at
http://marketplace.authorsden.com"
I can hardly wait to try all its features. Check it out for yourself. And while you're poking around, look at the different membership levels. At a bare minimum sigh up for the free level. Even if you have a Web site of your own, all those outside links coming back to your Web site make for very good Web site opitmizaton (SEO). And it is great backup when your server gives you fits. And, think of the networking opportunities among your fellow AD authors!
Forget the Ties: Fathers Like Surprises, Too!
My writing friend Carolyn Howard-Johnson is celebrating Father's Day with poetry this year. This is how:
How about literature for Father’s Day instead of ties or dinner?
We know ties are a cliché and in a few years, Dad won’t remember one Father’s Day dinner from another. Let’s face it, not all literature is created equal, thus some books are just as fleeting, though most would be a step up from a gift certificate and certainly would help support the industry that we believe important for the future.
I’m proposing—selfishly—poetry. Frugally!
First, you may have never given your father, grandfather, or a favorite father figure in your life a book of poetry. Thus, it will be memorable.
A small book of poetry will also be flattering. He will appreciate being treated tenderly. In fact, present a small chapbook with a single rose or gladiolus spray. Who says that only women want romance and tenderness in their lives!
Some of the readers of this blog could easily write a poem—even if they don’t think poetry their forte. Print it out on some lineny paper and present it with any other gift you may be giving.
You might choose to tuck it inside the cover of the Chapbook Imagining the Future: Ruminations on Fathers and Other Masculine Apparitions that Magdalena Ball and I wrote for our Celebration Series of chapbooks. Our idea for this series is to have small books written for those who prefer something a little a little more literary than the typical greeting card, but still accessible for those who didn’t study literature in school. And at an affordable price. With cover art (and sometimes interior art) chosen from among our circle of talented writing and artist friends.
Most of our booklets are $6.95. We now have one for mothers (She Wore Emerald Then: Reflections on Motherhood, www.budurl.com/MotherChapbook), one that says love (Cherished Pulse: Unconventional Love Poetry, www.budurl.com/CherishedPulse) and one for men and fathers (Imagining the Future, www.budurl.com/Imagining). We’re working on one for Christmas (not the holidays, but Christmas). It will be called Blooming Red.
Think of your poetry presentation to Dad as a Father’s Day card; it costs little more than a really nice one. Or think of it as a tuck-in gift or a tie-on as part of the wrap. Any poetry book you choose can be made more personal if you tie in a little grosgrain or satin ribbon inside the crease of the book to be used as a bookmark.
And don’t forget the hug.
Here is a sample poem from Imagining the Future (www.budurl.com/Imagining) : It was originally published by Dash, a literary journal.
Long Before They Shut the Napster Down
my father collected blursounds
get out of town
downloaded into the night soft jazzy
lights, sweet pink smoke
the smell of Jack Daniel's hot
satin doll
to real applause, nothing canned
found in the night a voice
like a staccato bass Wes Bowen
at KSL croons ella and shearing
at midnight to benefit a crowd
of one, alone at the wheel
make believe
marimbas, smooth
lullaby of birdland
sweet humanbaby-whine of clarinets
and a moon
no electronic nothing
humthrum of base, brushswish metal on cymbals
tell you what it's all about
lucky to get it before they shut the music down
smokey joe's
dispenser of joy, free of charge
cut me a rose
Happy Father's Day!
Classic Book on Promotion for Authors Gets New Review
The Frugal Book Promoter: How to do What Your Publisher Won’t
Star Publish
Genre: Nonfiction: Writers/Marketing/
In today’s publishing environment, the author is often responsible for promoting their book. There are ways to do this, this book lists many of them, and you may come up with some of your own after reading The Frugal Book Promoter.
It would be nice if your publisher did the promoting for you, but most authors do not have names like King, Bradbury, or Rice to name a few that might have their publishers doing more for them than the average writer. The Frugal Promoter to the rescue, in this book you will find out about press kits, and more. There is also information about how to do media releases, and ways to get publicity for you, and your book.
This reviewer believes that this book can be good for promoting anything, just replace the word “book”, with a service, product, or anything you are trying to let the public know about.
It is up to the author to have the willingness to get out and do the work. Anyone can do it, if he or she is of the mindset to get out and promote your book. Many publishers are not going to do it for you, and may ask you for a promotion plan. Without one, you may not get far in the publishing game unless you decide to self-publish. If you choose a nontraditional way to publish your book, you will have to do the promotion for it to sell. Either way, it is up to the author to promote these days. If you are lucky, you may get some help from a publisher, but do not rely on getting it.
The authors best bet is to have this book handy for ways to promote your book. This reviewer found the information in this book to be valuable to anyone wishing to promote his or her book.
The Frugal Book Promoter receives a five star rating from this reviewer.
Book Trailer Productions
Simple, Powerful & Affective Book Marketing
We see them everywhere. Book Trailers. Author and publishers use them to market books. They are powerful and very affective, however, they can get quite expensive depending upon the production.
Now by popular demand, we have added book trailer creations and productions to our services and will also soon be launching a new web site that offers many additional services for authors.
After much thought and also requesting some input from other authors about book trailer creations. We have decided to take the simple, powerful, affective and affordable approach.
After pricing book trailer creations and productions now I know why many authors say that can't afford them. Yikes, some of these little productions can get quite expensive. With that said, we have decided to offer some simple book trailers without all the high dollar flash. After all the whole concept and purpose of using a book trailer is to market your book and convey a message, not win video production of the year. May your Oscar be in book sales and not a trophy for a video production that you paid a arm and a leg for.
With that said, the following two video's are for your viewing pleasure as simple samples. Simply visit Book Trailer Productions and view the two samples which are just a tad over a minute long. You will see two book trailer samples of the same book. The 1st book trailer offers black backgrounds with white fonts, simple and clean. The second book trailer offers a colored background (that matches a color is the actual book cover) with colored fonts, yet still simple and clean.
The whole purpose of these two book trailers are simply to provide you with a simple sample of a affordable book trailer that we can create for you using Photocopy CS3 / 4 and some other high end programs.
Aggie Villaneuva's Freebie Promotion Opp for Writers
Guest Post by Aggie Villaneuva
I love the name of Carolyn’s blog, Sharing With Writers. It underscores my ideals at Visual Arts Junction where I’m constantly saying, “We’re not in competition; we’re in this together.”
And that’s the core of the VAJ Buzz Club. Together we make it happen for all of us. What does that mean? Let me ‘splain.
We've all learned that as soon as that first book is published writers learn that we can no longer just sit back and sign books at events created for us. We are expected to be branders, professional bloggers, promoters, advertisers, event organizers, search engine optimizers, and the list seems endless. It's like we're expected to learn several new careers to support our writing career, which we no longer have time to practice.
Professional promotion companies are everywhere online offering to take over that burden, and they usually do a great job of it. But who can afford them? Obviously some can, but most writers are like me. There is no such thing for me as an advertising budget. There is barely an anything budget.
There are also fabulous books out there, such as Carolyn Howard-Johnson's The Frugal Book Promoter, that teaches us how to promote our work.
She even tailors many ideas in it for those who'd rather be writing and those who refuse to pay big bucks for promotion.
If you've chosen to continue writing rather than be overwhelmed in a marketing world you know nothing about; if your choice is to let others take care of the promotion, but you demand a price you can afford; there is now a place for you. You'll love Carolyn's book and you'll love The VAJ Buzz Club http://www.visualartsjunction.com/?page_id=4047, group promotional power.
We’ve all struggled with these problems. We've said:
· I know I need to launch my book, product or event, but I haven’t the foggiest how to do that.
· I’d rather be writing. I need to be writing.
· It takes too much time to set up interviews and reviews.
· Why are there so many authors out there called bestsellers? My book is just as good as theirs.
· Everyone talks about creating a buzz. How can I do that for my book, product or event?
· Even should I learn the marketing basics, how do I get a list I can promote to that is large enough to create an effective buzz?
· Before I can even think about creating a buzz I have to increase my subscribers and site visitors. Though I work at it all the time, I can’t seem to do that.
· Brand recognition? I wish!
· Yes, I know I could hire a promotional company, but I just can’t afford to spend thousand.
· Even if I tried to promote a launch on my own, how can I offer all the wonderful bonus gifts I’ve seen in other launches?
Working to promote my novel and my blog, Visual Arts Junction, is where I realized how hard it is to do alone. There is more than safety in numbers, there is power in numbers; promotional power plus affordability.
I worked hard for the past year to promote my novel, Rightfully Mine God's Equal Rights Amendment
.
In April, 2010 Rightfully Mine not only made the top #100 on Amazon (best seller status) in three categories for both for print and electronic version, it made #2 in two categories, and #8 in another. I took this a screen shot to prove it—mostly to myself!
So my model can help others solve these problems--for each other. And the VAJ Buzz Club is one place to do it!
What the VAJ Buzz Club is Not: This is NOT a buy-each-others’-book-to-become-a-best-seller-club.
What the VAJ Buzz Club is: We are group promotion at its most powerful.
Here’s what VAJ Buzz Club offer members who launch.
· Freedom to write while you enjoy a humongous book, product or event launch.
· Less than ½ price charter membership to the first 24 members to launch. Price locked in for life.
· My organizational/promotional experience at work for you. See bio below.
· Other members’ promotional platforms supporting your launches.
· Direct email marketing to thousands about your launch.
· Social media promotion to tens of thousands in your niche.
· Live interview with Nanci Arvizu at Page Readers to promote your launch.
· Four additional interviews at the sites of our members.
· Huge probability that you will become a bestseller through your launch.
· Offer your customers instant and dozens of free bonus gifts.
· Increase your subscribers and site visitors year round.
Here’s what else we offer
· You don’t have to launch a book/product/event to use our services. We offer a la carte services too, or you can bundle them with your launch to drive an even bigger buzz. http://www.visualartsjunction.com/?page_id=8841
· I have a working relationship with dozens of interviewers and reviewers. I’ll contact all of them for you, submitting to standard interview sites, both live and print. This is in addition to the interviews you already get with your paid launching membership.
· You don’t have to become a paid launching member to reap great benefits. Become a FREE supporting member. That’s the genius of this club. Every member benefits greatly with each and every launch.
· And much more coming soon.
Here’s what VAJ Buzz Club offers FREE to supporting members.
· Spike your visitor count year round. I’ve set up the system where each member gets visitors crawling over their sites during each 2-day launch.
· Spike your subscriber numbers year round. In the same innovative format, no matter who is launching, all members gain subscribers during each 2-day launch.
· All this spreads your brand recognition like wildfire year round.
This innovative structure means you don’t have to learn a new marketing career after all. The goal is to let you write while you are THE BUZZ. Check it out.
If you don’t want any of these benefits, then don’t go directly to our VAJ Buzz Club pages to learn more about membership. But if you believe in paying it forward, and are willing to invest a few hours per month to make each member’s launch as successful as yours, then check out our club pages. Hope to see you there.
To Be Frugal or Not to Be Frugal: The Choice Shouldn't Be Yours
Reviews for iPAD Used As a Reader Is Positive! What Does That Mean for You?
Reviews for the iPad--like the one on the front page of the LA Times Calendar section this week--universally praise, laud, and acclaim the iPad as a reader. Most have a few good things to say about Kindle, too. But, generally, reviewers seem to love, love, love! iPad and seem willing to forego the features on Kindle they deem better for the color, book-like feel and design of the Pad.
What does that mean for us writers? Well, in addition to my raving on and on that a smart author in any genre should get their books available as e-books as soon as possible, getting your book available on iPAD will get you in on the ground floor of a new, VERY popular toy. You can use Smashwords.com or iFOGOvillage.ning.com to do that.
Should YOU buy one. There is a big, big difference between the cost of these tech toys. Given a choice, well--you know how frugal I am. When it comes to making my books availalbe on one or the other, well, it isn't a choice! As good marketers, we authors want to make our books available whatever ways people want to buy them!
New Author Help: Great Editing Is Great Marketing
Because I often espouse great editing as first in line for great marketing, here is a booklet for those who would improve that skill.
Title: Great Little Last-Minute Editing Tips for Writers
Author: Carolyn Howard-Johnson
Publisher: HowToDoItFrugally.com
ISBN: 1450507654
What’s more important to a writer than words? Not much . . . maybe how to put words together properly, using correct grammar, weaving them together to create descriptive or informative content . . . but, we still go back to the foundation of every writer’s manuscript or article . . . words.
Carolyn Howard Johnson’s latest book, Great Little Last-Minute Editing Tips for Writers, is a little 55 page book (or e-book) that a writer can refer back to over and over and over to find help with some of the most common word trippers.
In the Before You Get Started section of this book, Howard-Johnson explains, “Great Little Last-Minute Editing Tips for Writers is full of words that are trouble causers. They either sound alike or are spelled similarly. They are not arcane words that you will seldom have an occasion to use. They are not words the writer knows but still mistypes.”
Words such as climactic and climatic used improperly or misspelled can mean a rejection when submitting to the “gatekeepers.” The addition or deletion of that little second “c” makes a huge difference in the meaning of the word.
Or, how about the words: all together / altogether; demur / demure; one in the same / one and the same; and peeked / peaked / piqued. These are just a few of the word trippers added in the Great Little Last-Minute Editing Tips for Writers.
Listed in an A – Z format, the words chosen for this book are thoroughly explained with the aid of examples. This all makes for an easy to understand and easy to read guide. The author also provides two resource sections at the end of the book: Reading: One Editing Book at a Time, and Other Writers’ Aids.
I happen to be a fan of Carolyn Howard-Johnson’s Frugal series and have the Frugal Editor as well as the Frugal Book Promoter. They are a part of my writing and marketing toolkit. The author has done it again with the Great Little Last-Minute Editing Tips for Writers. She has compiled this much needed booklet as an addendum to a list in the appendix of her book, The Frugal Editor: Put Your Best Book Forward to Avoid Humiliation and Ensure Success.
I learned a great deal from Great Little Last-Minute Editing Tips for Writers and will be referring to it often; I highly recommend it.
Frugalisimo Marketing from Guest Blogger Mindy Philips Lawrence
Mindy Philips Lawrence writes a regular Itty Bitty Column for my newsletter, Sharing with Writers, as well as serving as line editor for it. This column received lots of response from readers (in spite of the fact that list building is the core of the plan I outline in The Frugal Book Promoter!). At least--one way or the other--Mindy and I are getting people to hear this message!
Cheap is a word with bad connotations. I’d say “frugalista” except I hear the word is now trademarked and I don’t want the legal system sending me cease-and-desist letters, so I will use the term “FRUGALISMO” to define doing things effectively but with as few monetary resources as possible.
Recently, I received an e-mail wanting to know if I was the publicist for Norris Church Mailer. I have no idea why anyone thought this but it made me drool to think that she has a new book out, a memoir called A Ticket to the Circus, and that anyone thought I had anything to do with it. Our only connection is that we are both from Arkansas. But it made me think. I began to wonder, if I WERE her publicist, how I would promote her work, a hypothetical dream job. From there I thought of how writers without Mailer’s resources could promote their creative work and still get the job done.
So, in the same vein of our fearless leader, Carolyn Howard-Johnson, here are some “frugalismo” ways to promote your work.
[If you have ideas, PLEASE forward them to me and I will post them in the Itty Bitty with your name and the title of your work (or work in progress).]
BUILD YOUR OWN DATABASE: Draw a radius around where you live. Stick a compass in your hometown and decide how far you are willing to travel to promote your book or other creative work. When you’ve done this, use the Internet to list every single media outlet within that radius. Build a database either in MS Excel or another database system such as ACT 2000 or FileMaker Pro. Include in this database Internet Web sites and phone numbers and e-mail addresses for local radio and television stations, newspapers, and magazines that might help get the word out on your work. You can branch out as your promotional plan begins to work, allowing you to travel farther cause you are selling your work.
USE A GOOD RESOURCE such as The Frugal Book Promoter, an Internet search, or both, to learn how to write an exceptional press release and query letter. You’ll have to do this in an incredibly professional way so go to school on professional releases you find from other writers and publicists. Go to publicists’ Web sites and see how they do what they do. LEARN!
KEEP TRACK OF WHAT YOU DO and when you do it. Make certain to update your contacts every six months. People move around in publishing and media often. Just call and ask if the person you have as your contact is still there and, if not, who has that position now. You’ll need to send a new letter to a new person to introduce yourself. This can be an e-letter or one by the good old US Mail, according to what the publisher wants.
IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE PROMOTING YOURSELF, as some do, think of yourself as a hypothetical big-name writer and promote that person. Of course, this person is actually YOU. You are worth promoting. Your work is worth promoting.
Writers like to write. Often, they don’t enjoy promoting their own work but it’s necessary. Unless you can afford to pay a publicist $1000 a month, it behooves you to learn to do this. And you want to be successful, don’t you? Of COURSE you do!
This is post number one in a series on self-promotion. In the next issue, I’ll have other ideas and, hopefully, some that others have sent me to put here. It’s spring. Let’s bloom! If you want to get in on the coming columns, send Carolyn an e-mail with SUBSCRIBE in the subject line. Her address is HoJoNews (at) AOL (dot) com.
